Celebrating His Upcoming Showcase at Artisans Bespoke Jewellers – July 18–19

When it comes to coloured gemstones, few names in the Australian jewellery industry are as respected as George Palos of Facets Australia. A lifelong gem enthusiast with an eye for rarity and beauty, George’s career has been shaped by a deep family legacy, global experience, and an unrivalled passion for coloured gems.

Due to popular demand, this July, Artisans Bespoke Jewellers is thrilled to welcome George Palos for a special two-day coloured gemstone event on July 18–19. Clients will have the exclusive opportunity to view and acquire one-of-a-kind, hand-selected gemstones from George’s private collection — a trove that has taken decades to curate.

A Legacy Born in Colour

George’s love for gemstones is in his blood. His father, Orestis, established a sapphire mining venture in Umba, Tanganyika (now Tanzania) with his brothers, instilling in George a fascination for coloured stones from a young age. This family legacy set the foundation for what would become a remarkable career.

Educated at the Gemmological Institute of America, George studied under some of the world’s top instructors in both diamond and coloured gemstone disciplines. After originally founding Gempalos & Co, George stepped away briefly following his father’s passing, only to return with a renewed vision and re-establish the business under a new banner — Facets Australia. Years later, he reacquired the Gempalos & Co name, reclaiming an important part of his personal and professional heritage.

A Curated Collection Decades in the Making

George’s inventory is anything but ordinary — handpicked over the course of many years. Every stone is selected for its uniqueness, quality, and story. His renowned collection includes, but isn’t limited to Alexandrite, Amethyst, Aquamarine, Citrine, Emerald, Garnet, Morganite, Opal, Quartz, Ruby, Sapphire, Spinel, Tanzanite, Topaz, Tourmaline and Zircon. George has a vast network of gemstone merchants and sources at his fingertips, so if he doesn’t have something available at the time, he can easily source or have something specialty cut for you.

Among his favourites? Garnet, Tourmaline, and Spinel — not just for their beauty, but for the vast spectrum of colour they offer. “Each of these families of gemstones is available in almost every colour of the rainbow,” George says. “They also vary dramatically in price, making them accessible to every kind of buyer.”

What’s Trending in Colour

Today’s clients are increasingly drawn to the natural beauty and individuality of coloured gemstones. Stones like Morganite, Aquamarine, Spinel, and the uniquely Australian “Teal” Sapphire — prized for its hypnotic blend of blue and green hues — are growing in popularity for both engagement rings and custom-designed jewellery pieces.

This shift has also come as a counterpoint to the rise of lab-grown diamonds. While marketed as a more accessible or ‘ethical’ alternative, lab-grown diamonds lack the natural rarity and long-term value that coloured gemstones inherently offer. Because lab-grown diamonds can be mass-produced in factories, they’re rapidly decreasing in price — making them more comparable to synthetic costume jewellery than heirloom-quality treasures.

In contrast, natural coloured gemstones are not only formed over millions of years but are increasingly rare and irreplaceable. As George notes, “Fine natural-coloured stones have long been undervalued — but that is changing. Demand is growing, and their worth is being recognised not just for beauty, but for scarcity and authenticity.” This philosophy is also deeply embraced by the team at Artisans Bespoke Jewellers, who have proudly championed natural coloured gemstones and actively educated clients about their beauty and value since Tammy founded the business in 2006.
